There are two types of lawnmowers either gas or electric. We will concern ourselves here with the gas lawnmower. The gas mower can be a push or ride lawnmower but no matter which it is the most important thing to know is that the gas should be fresh. When you purchase the gas for the mower use a plastic gas container since it will not rust. If you are using a five gallon gas tank the suggestion is to get rid of it as it is too large and will hold more gas than the mower will use and remain in the tank and become old gas which is not good for the mower. Gas that is more than thirty days old is not good for the mower engine as it will become tacky and turn to gum in the mower's engine fuel lines. Don't know what kind of gas to buy? Eighty seven octane or more is best for your lawnmower. Do not use weed whacker fuel in the lawnmower as the gas is too rich and can cause spark plug problems.

Every lawnmower manual recommends the type of oil that should be used and how often the oil should be changed. A general suggestion is that the oil should be drained after every fifty hours of operating the lawnmower. This recommendation is the same for all mowers including the gas lawnmower. Changing the spark plug is also covered in the mower's manual. Again, the general recommendation is to change the spark plug every one hundred hours of operation.

The gas lawnmower has an air filter which should be checked every twenty five hours or every season. If the air filter is dirty the mower will not work properly. To check how dirty the air filter is remove the filter and tap it gently on a flat surface. Dirt will fall out and if it's very dirty than it should be replaced. The mower housing should be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water to remove all dirt, grease and grass build up. A scraper will remove grass.

Question by zerohourx: Riding Lawnmower - How do i transport it back home?
I'm considering purchasing a used riding lawnmower. I do have a van but was wondering that when i do finally locate the lawnmower how the heck do i transport it back to my house? For your average riding lawnmower for suburban homes can such a lawnmower be picked up by 2 adults and placed into a back of a van or is such a unit too heavy, too wide, too tall for such a thing. How do i go about transporting it back home?

You could rent one of those little u-haul trailers and use wooden planks to drive it up into it. Mine is too heavy for 2 people to lift. I don't know what type you have. We have a Workhorse.
